The Scarf…….
So I have always been a savvy shopper and always wanted to find more than one way of wearing an outfit. I wanted to always transform a look with anything I could find, be it a belt, purse, stockings, jewellery, or mixing and matching colours. This is where I say my mum should have definitely had me sit by the sewing machine when I was younger so I could learn the tricks of the needle and thread. In any case, I am grateful she put me onto fashion and I guess I have styling down and am always perfecting that art…..
Might I suggest we all watch “Confessions of a Shopaholic”, now I am not confessing to being a shopaholic although I do qualify myself as a savvy shopper, and believe we all have it within us to be just that? After watching the said movie, it inspired me to write on my love for scarfs…. Now I am not saying that we all should empty our bank accounts over an accessory such as a scarf whether it is Cashmere or a Pashmina (silk, wool, viscose etc). This little accessory comes in various shapes, colours, designs and sizes; it can be worn around the neck, around the head turban style, worn as a headband, across/around the shoulders, around the waist, any which way one needs it, as some scaves have even been worn as tops. I have some great scarfs that I bought on sale in expensive stores, but at the same time I have found quality in the Pashmina Scarfs from Woolworths – let’s just say I have stocked up a few of them and I use them more often than not. A scarf has that ability to help transform a look and a pop of colour never hurt anyone. It’s all about taking a risk in fashion and making what you wear your own.
Fashion has seen many trends come and go from colour, cuts, styles you name it, but the scarf has proved time and again that it is an ideal and must have accessory whether it be day or night, dressed up or down, it can be worn throughout every season depending on the texture and is neither age nor gender specific. Simply put - It’s Timeless. Compared to other accessories that may be bulky to wear, this little item that you can have in tow whether it be neatly folded in a bag, folded in a pocket (for men), accessorised around your handbag/pocketbook strap, always helps you be comfortable, keeps you warm and can help you change a look – its chic – what more can one ask for from an accessory. Everyone can try out any colour although muted colours go best on older gals, and bright bursts of colour may work well on the younger gals. I will admit I am one who never wants to be categorised when it comes to fashion and so I try everything across the board that works for me. I suggest we all do what makes us happy and wear what we want. A scarf is a little power suit on its own, it’s all about how you wear it and incorporate it into your look.
We all should try out this fun and in-expensive accessory… I’ll be spotting mine as always when you see me trotting the streets of Jozi…
